Recently, someone asked me why a nurse would want cannabis education. So I decided to answer it in the form of a blog. I learned long ago that if one person has a question many more have the same question.
Off top, you are responsible for the care you offer your patients on any given day and ignorance is not bliss!
Our job as nurses is to be a resource for the most ethically sound information as it relates to overall wellness. Why would cannabis education be any different? I believe it is our duty to educate ourselves and remain informed in all areas of the body and cannabis education is untapped at this point in cannabis evolution.
Below are some reasons why a nurse would want to learn about cannabis:
Cannabis is a billion dollar and growing industry
Cannabis has been used since the beginning of documented history. There are people who specialize in knowing and understanding the effects on the body and many use this to build businesses that afford them wealth. In general, nurses have not been privy to this and losing out on an opportunity that can change their lives. We are unique because we know and understand basic patho physiology and care for the patients. We rely on theory to our practice so we are known as the most trusted profession. This is a golden opportunity to leverage that and make a difference in healthcare. In a way we could never achieve at the bedside.
Cannabis education includes understanding the largest system in the body
Every nurse knows that nursing school was no walk in the park and pathophysiology was probably the most challenging … or was it Med Surg? Either way, neither course included information about the endocannabinoid system. Did you know it is the largest system within the body? Did you know your body has its own cannabinoids called endocannabinoids? And cannabis has its own cannabinoids called phyto-cannabinoids that both bind to the endocannabinoid system? Through all those late night study sessions where did you see that? How could you possibly be providing your patient with the best care if you do not understand the body in its entirety?
People use it
If you do or you don’t there is a huge population of people who use cannabis for medicinal and recreational reasons. There is a cannabis buzz out there and the general population is hearing of the amazing things cannabis can do so there is a growing population of people who are experimenting. They are not always forthcoming and when they are most healthcare professionals are just as uninformed about the culture and healthcare considerations so there is no exchange of ideas or best practices. We need to be more aware of what to look for, how to assess and recommendations for use.
I started this blog by saying why would a nurse want to learn about cannabis but really the question is why not? With that, I am reversing the question to you and asking; why do you want to learn about cannabis?
